Flag Raising Ceremony

The Flag Raising Tradition is a beloved annual event at Heritage Park celebrating Kitimat’s multicultural heritage. Flags representing different countries and cultures welcome visitors and reflect the diversity of our community.

Flag Raising Tradition

Each spring, Heritage Park comes alive with colour, music, community, and pride as Kitimat gathers for the annual Flag Raising Tradition.

This beloved community event celebrates Kitimat’s multicultural heritage, with flags representing the many countries and cultures that help shape our community. Waving proudly at Heritage Park, the flags offer a warm welcome to visitors and a visible reminder of the people, stories, and traditions that make Kitimat home.

The ceremony often includes a Haisla blessing, remarks from local leaders, music or choir performances, and a chance for community members to gather, visit, and enjoy refreshments together. Past events have included hotdogs, cake, and support from local volunteers and community groups.

The Flag Raising Tradition is supported by the District of Kitimat and LNG Canada, with past support and participation from community partners including Tamitik Status of Women and Haisla Nation. Many local groups have also helped with the event over the years, including the Kitimat Humane Society and Girl Guides of Kitimat.

Set in beautiful Heritage Park, with picnic tables, gazebos, local history displays, a covered amphitheater, gardens, flowers, and shrubs maintained by the District of Kitimat, the Flag Raising Tradition is a meaningful way to celebrate Kitimat’s diversity in one of the community’s most scenic public spaces.

Countries may be added when there is local representation and community connection. If you have questions about future flags, country representation, or how flags are considered for Heritage Park, please contact the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce directly.
