KPAA Registry

Welcome to the Kitimat Public Art Alliance (KPAA) Public Art Property Registry.  The purpose of the KPAA registry is to connect professional artists with local property owners who want to support the creation of public art in our community.

How it Works

Any owner of land or a building in or adjacent to a public space (commercial area, parkland, etc.) may list the portion of the land or building upon which they are willing to display public art.  (For example, a wall on a building upon which a mural could be painted, or a courtyard in which a sculpture could be installed.  See our Public Art Collection to see what has been accomplished so far.

Any artist interested in creating a work of public art may submit a proposal with respect to a specific property in the registry.  If KPAA and the property owner support the proposal, then the three parties will work together to bring the project to life.

Proposals for public art should include the following:
  • Description of the proposed mural or installation
  • Simple sketch of the design
  • Quote for artist's fees, materials and expenses
  • Available dates between May long weekend and September long weekend

If KPAA and the property owner support the proposal, they will provide the artist with a $500 design fee for a detailed design.  If the detailed design is accepted, they will work with the artist to find funding for the project.  If there is sufficient funding, the parties will sign a written agreement confirming their roles and responsibilities in relation to the completion of the work.

Note:  The availability of funding varies from year-to-year, and submitting a proposal does not mean that it will be funded.

To participate in the registry, property owners must provide the following:

  • Photos of the building or courtyard upon which public art may be displayed
  • Dimensions of the building or courtyard
  • In the case of a wall, a description of the surface of the wall (stucco, painted concrete, raw/painted wood, etc.)
  • A map of Kitimat showing the location of the property
  • The cost-sharing proposed by the property owner
  • The date by which the property will be ready for public art if renovations or repairs are required first

KPAA has volunteers who may be available to assist with gathering this information (photos, measurements, etc.) upon request.

Property owners are generally expected to contribute 50 percent cost of the public art.  In the case of a very large mural, or a building which requires significant repairs in order for a mural or other work of art to be installed, KPAA will consider fundraising more than half of the cost of the project.

Note:  The availability of funding varies from year-to-year, and entering a property into the registry does not guarantee that a public art project for that property will be funded.

Public art in Kitimat would not be possible without generous funding from the District of Kitimat, community members and local businesses and industries.  KPAA provides public recognition to all financial sponsors of public art in the form of social media posts, newspaper articles, and public presentations to Mayor and Council.

Please contact KPAA through email at KitimatPAA@gmail.com if you would like to make a donation.
