Kitimat Public Art Alliance

Kitimat Public Art Alliance is a coalition of diverse individuals and organizations with a common interest in bringing public art to Kitimat.

Building Community Through Art

We respectfully acknowledge that this work takes place on the unceded traditional territory of the Haisla Nation. We are honoured to support artists creating public art here and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a living cultural landscape.

The Kitimat Public Art Alliance [KPAA] was established in 2020 by a group of community members who share a simple goal: bringing more public art to Kitimat.

About the KPAA

The main focus of this organization is to bring murals to downtown Kitimat and support other smaller public art projects. We also support community creativity, build partnerships with local and regional artists, and look for new opportunities to bring colour, culture, and connection to public spaces.

Our first objective is to facilitate the creation of several murals by professional artists in the City Centre area of downtown Kitimat.

Our theme for these murals is "our natural environment," which may include landscapes, flora, fauna and the people who inhabit it, depending on the inspiration of each artist. Future projects will highlight the people, cultures, and histories of Kitimat, as well as the economic and industrial realities of our town.

The Kitimat Public Art Alliance gratefully acknowledges the annual financial support it has received from the District of Kitimat since 2022, and the many other financial sponsors who make our work possible.

KPAA Objectives

The Kitimat Public Art Alliance commissions public art such as murals and other art forms to strengthen community identity, support artists, and enhance shared public spaces. Our mural program is guided by the following objectives:

Wellbeing

Murals add colour, energy, and warmth to public spaces. They lift people’s spirits, refresh the look of downtown, and help build a sense of pride in the community.
  • Bring visual beauty that boosts mood
  • Make the downtown feel renewed and inviting
  • Encourage hands-on creativity like paint-by-number walls, rock painting, and chalk events

Sense of Place

Public art helps tell our community’s story. Murals celebrate our natural environment, support local and regional artists, and honour that Kitimat is on the unceded territory of the Haisla Nation.
  • Showcase local landscapes and themes
  • Invite Haisla artists to help share their culture through mural work
  • Feature art over time that reflects the people, cultures, and industries that shape Kitimat

Tourism

A strong public art presence makes Kitimat more appealing to visitors. An annual mural event can attract tourists and support local vendors, building momentum as part of a regional arts experience.
  • Makes the community more welcoming for visitors
  • Creates an annual event centred on public art
  • Joins neighbouring communities in promoting a regional mural trail

Vibrant Local Economy

Murals are a cost-effective way to improve the downtown core. They draw people in, create energy, and support local businesses by increasing foot traffic.
  • Affordable downtown beautification
  • More activity that benefits nearby businesses
  • Creates a lively atmosphere and helps discourage vandalism
