Annual Fish Derby

Join us every Labour Day weekend for the Kitimat Fishing Derby; a community tradition of friendly competition, family fun, and great prizes. Participants compete in Ocean, River, or Youth categories.

This Annual Kitimat Fishing Derby is a popular annual event and is usually held during Labour Day weekend. It is a two-day event where participants compete for various prizes by fishing for Coho salmon along the Kitimat River or Douglas Channel, either from shore or on a boat. There are age categories (men, women, and junior/youth) with prizes, both cash and rods and reels. Derby organizers conduct weigh-ins at the Kitimat Rod and Gun Association with an awards ceremony after, with further draw prizes.

We are thrilled to report that the 38th Annual Fishing Derby came and delivered! Another successful community event for the residents of the community. Thank you to everyone who threw their lines in the waters, hoping for a great catch and bragging rights, naturally. Here is the official list of winners for this year, though we have to say, whether it was a seasoned fisher or the new kid on the block, we saw smiles all around, which makes everyone a winner in our books.

  • Adults (13+): $20.00 + GST = $21.00
  • Youth (12 & under): $10.00 + GST = $10.50

Prizes are coming in daily for the raffle portion, so you will see when you get here. For the actual derby, we have more prizes and more prize money, thanks to all our sponsors, with a special thanks to Haisla Ledcor.
 
Adult: Ocean Category
  • 1st prize: $1000 + rod & reel donated by MK Bay Marina
  • 2nd prize: $500
  • 3rd prize: $250

Adult: River Category

  • 1st prize $1000 + rod & reel donated by Bradley’s Bait & Tackle
  • 2nd prize: $500
  • 3rd prize: $250
Youth:
  • 1st prize: $250 + rod & reel donated by Ron’s Bait & Tackle
  • 2nd prize: $100 + a prize
  • 3rd prize $50 + a prize
 
We will also have 10 hidden weight prizes for $250 each, as well as the Finley prize of $50, which is given to the youngest girl who weighs in a fish (If we have more than one girl of the same age, it will be a random draw)

Yes, you will be able to win one of our fantastic prizes donated by local businesses in our community. For the major prizes, you must be ONSITE TO WIN. If you’re not, we will pull another ticket.

Winners will be announced at the Kitimat Rod & Gun Club. We will start the ceremonies at 6:45 pm. The BBQ will be provided by the Humane Society.

Yes, the shuttle will begin at 4 pm. Pick up for the shuttle will be at the lower parking lot near Bradley’s and
Riverlodge, look for the signage.

Parking is very limited so carpool or take us up on our offer for the FREE SHUTTLE thanks to Trans Dev

Yes, people who ride the shuttle will be entered in the draw.

Yes, the Humane Society will have hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and drinks. Cost by donation.

There will be large board games for the kids to play with.

We love our dogs in Kitimat, and we love our residents, so I am thinking we leave the dogs at home, so if someone fears dogs, there is not an issue.

It’s Kitimat people… chances are it will 😊😊 Bring an umbrella or a good raincoat. The event will still happen, rain or shine.
