The Business of the Year Award is presented to a business that has been in operation for three years or more.
• The award recognizes a business that has made significant contributions to the economic health of the community or business growth;
• Continually produces quality product and/or service;
• Innovation and creativity in business and/or employee development;
• Consistent pre-sales and after sales customer service;
• Proven business growth;
• Active involvement in the community and/or business associations;
• Expertise in their industry;
• This business has been nominated for other business-related awards.

COMMUNITY BOOSTER AWARD

This award honours an incorporated, non-for-profit or society.
• Proven record of exceptional generosity through significant volunteer time;
• Has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to philanthropy;
• Active interest in the civic, cultural, social, and moral welfare of the community;
• Future financial sustainability and competitiveness in focus;
• New and innovative approaches/initiatives are used to benefit the people they represent or assist.

EMERGING ENTREPRENEUR AWARD

A person who has organized and assumed the risk of a business locally which has been open for at least 2 years. An entrepreneur is defined as a person who has the unique skills and exceptional initiative to establish a business venture.
• Individually owned and operated business;
• Successful in starting their own business;
• Trendsetter in recognizing a new market, product, service, technological advancement, or opportunity and led the way;
• Business is profitable and is ready for next stage growth;
• Shows true innovation and a willingness to take risks.

GO GREEN AWARD

This award honours a business that demonstrates leadership with their environmental and sustainable business practices.
• Takes the lead in improving the environmental sustainability of their products/services, business practices, programs and/or operations;
• Demonstrates that they are aware of the scale of their impacts in the social and natural environments in which they operate and that they are taking steps to manage them;
• Acknowledges that environmental and social impacts are becoming important concerns in business practice;
• Created action plans in addressing environmental issues and/or waste;
• Implemented a recycling plan for their operations.

HOME-BASED BUSINESS

The Home-Based Business Award presented to businesses that have experienced the rewards and difficulties of owning a home-based business.
• Business must be located in Kitimat or Kitamaat area;
• Business should demonstrate good business practice and have been in business for at least two years;
• Business should be easy to contact and offers excellent customer service;
• Business should be easy to locate and accessible to local traffic;
• Dedication to customer service.

SMALL BUSINESS AWARD: 10 EMPLOYEES OR LESS

This award recognizes a business with 10 or fewer employees that has been operational for at least two years.
• The business has a reputation for integrity and a high level of customer service in the community;
• The business, its owners, and/or its employee(s) participate and/or support community and industry-related activities;
• The business’ owner(s) or upper management has an excellent working relationship with their employees;
• Demonstrates strong leadership with the ability to drive the business forward;
• New and innovative approaches/initiatives are used to benefit the business and/or its customers;
• Demonstrates a commitment to staff development and training.

MEDIUM BUSINESS AWARD: 11 - 49 EMPLOYEES

This award recognizes a business with 11 to 49 employees that has been operational for at least two years.
• The business has a reputation for integrity and a high level of customer service in the community;
The business, its owners, and/or its employee(s) participate and/or support community and industry-related activities;
• The business’ owner(s) or upper management has an excellent working relationship with their employees;
• The business is being managed with future financial sustainability and competitiveness in focus;
• New and innovative approaches/initiatives are used in order to benefit the business and/or its customers;
• The business invests in continuous improvement of its staff through professional development or other means.

LARGE BUSINESS AWARD: 50+ EMPLOYEES

This award recognizes a business with 50 or more employees that has been operational for at least two years.
• The business has a reputation for integrity and a high level of customer service in the community;
• The business, its owners, and/or its employee(s) participate and/or support community and industry-related activities;
• The business focuses on purchasing goods and services locally where possible;
• The business’ owner(s) or upper management has an excellent working relationship with their employees;
• The business has achieved employment or profitability growth;
• The business is being managed with future financial sustainability and competitiveness in focus;
• New and innovative approaches/initiatives are used in order to benefit the business and/or its customers;
• The business invests in continuous improvement of its staff through professional development or other means.

BUSINESS LEADER OF THE YEAR

This individual must be an owner/partner/manager of a business and active in the day-to-day management and operation of the business. This person demonstrates the following:
• Excellent role model;
• Inspires others to work collaboratively and creatively;
• Promotes a work environment that is respectful, collegial, and supportive;
• Actively involved in mentorship and development of others;
• Exhibits leadership in business and community affairs;
• Responds to business challenges and problems with effective solutions;
• Participates in community affairs and activities contributing time, effort, and resources;
•The individual demonstrates leadership through supporting community and/or industry-related activities and/or encourages his/her employees to do so;

INDIGENOUS JOINT VENTURE/PARTNERSHIP AWARD

The best way to strengthen a community is through meaningful partnerships. When businesses partner with Haisla Nation they provide stronger networks with the Haisla community and Kitimat town. Successful Haisla Indigenous partnerships are built on a foundation of mutual respect, common goals, and opportunities for employment.

• Must have been in operation for a minimum of 2 years;
• Must demonstrate a reputation for excellent customer service;
• Provides unwavering passion and consistent inspiration;
• Knowledgeable and compassionate about the community;
• Demonstrates integrity and sets an excellent example within the sector.

SERVICE AWARD: RETAIL

This award is presented to a business or organization which has made a difference in the retail industry, including grocery stores, real estate, clothing, vehicles, etc.
• Must have been in operation for a minimum of 2 years;
• Exemplifies excellence in performance, leadership, management, and marketing;
• Provides exceptional customer service, unwavering passion, and consistent inspiration;
• Shows excellence in the knowledge of their products;
• Does not manufacture what they sell.

TOURISM AWARD

This award is presented to business or organization which has made a difference in the development of tourism and/or offers unique programming or activities.
• Provides and promotes an outstanding visitor experience and actively encourages the growth of tourism;
• Evidence of business growth;
• Creates employment;
• Evidence of customer feedback detailing satisfaction with the service/facilities on offer.
• Commitment to sustainability and promoting tourism in the region;
• Increases the visibility of Kitimat and area;
• Provides and promotes outstanding visitor experiences.
